President's Report
Commissioner Morales Town Hall
Meeting: A general invite was
extended to all for
the District 7, Town Hall Meeting to be held
on May
31st at 7:00 p.m. at Miami City Hall.
Brickell Bay Village Apartments: All tenants
have been asked to vacate. Lawsuits are pending which may interrupt
developers plans.
1900 Brickell Avenue: City has ruled that
pre and post operative services could be conducted in the spa.
However sign advertising spa needed to be removed. Surgeon has
appealed ruling. BHA is appealing this latest allowance as it
is outside the original covenants limiting the surgeon's activities
on site.
Brickell Medians
Albert Dominguez from the City of Miami Public Works Department
informed membership re: the upcoming $100,000 Beautification
Grant currently awaiting review at the state level and its
subsequent
implementation schedule. A match of
$100,000 has been committed
by the City of Miami.
Landscape plans are available for review.
On June 5th representatives from the
landscape
firm and the City of Miami will travel to
Tallahassee to lobby
for a successful award. If the
proposal is rejected, the City
will honor its
monetary commitment to the project, and a reduced
project scope will be proposed. Current plans include a 50/50
split of funds to be dispersed between Brickell's residential
and business communities. Monies will be used to remove dead
plants and trees and install new hardy grass, plants and trees;
install superior irrigation systems at the ends of each median;
and reestablish maintenance plans. The residential area will
be designed with a "natural" theme, replete with hammocks,
heavy canopy and flowers. The commercial area will have a more
"modern" theme to compliment the existing
architecture.
The Brickell Area Association has found
funds to augment the public funds. A $39,835 bid for design fees
to enhance their 10 blocks has been submitted. The augmentation
may be used for additional lighting. BHA Members should consider
speaking with their associations to augment the residential efforts.
Possible uses for these monies are: expanded irrigation, complete
covering of medians with sod, the take over of the maintenance
and/or increased lighting on pedestrian walkway. Associations
could use their own vendors or staff to take over maintenance
of the medians in front of their buildings.
Police Report
Lt. Mirabile reported major
reduction in auto thefts in the month
of April, and
they have reached a stabilized norm. Burglaries
have had a slight upswing due to poor security in Business area
and late night, early morning robberies in parking
areas.
COMCA
Pat Rogers-Liebert and Dr. Bob Wolf presented information regarding
the misuse of condo fees by State administration affecting over
20,000 units throughout the State of Florida. Since 1992 fees
have increased from $1 to $4 per condo unit with the proviso
that the funds would be used to provide education, training and
oversight for condo managers and Board members. Audits show that
funds are being used for other items such as 60% for overhead
and assisting other groups such as mobile homes with their deficits
and emergencies. A lobby group has been formed and active
involvement
by residents is requested. A
representative from BHA will be
nominated to sit on
the Center for Condominium and Community
Living
board which reviews programs.
Trust for Public Land
Brenda Marshall and Lavinia
Freeman shared news of efforts ongoing
to research
concepts for a "greenway" corridor along
the Miami River. Plans include improving access to river, promoting
stewardship, celebrating cultural diversity and blending attractions
and commerce to create critical mass around the river.
Brickell Harbour Condominium / Point
View Street Closure
Steve Greenberg shared new proposal currently pending to restrict
non-local traffic through Point View by creating a wide cul-dai
-sac with landscaping at the 14th Street and Brickell Bay Drive
intersection, thus limiting access to only 15th Road and eliminating
all through traffice. A motion was made
"To support the proposal with the
proviso that a traffic light be installed at 14th Street and
Brickell prior to construction."
The vote was so close that it was agreed
to table the motion until the next meeting.
The next meeting will be held at 6:00
p.m., Wednesday, June 21st at the Palace.
