Florence Mazer moved
and Ron Smith seconded that the reading
of the
September Board Meeting minutes be waived and the minutes
accepted with two corrections offered by Tory Jacobs: Stormy
Welch should be Stoney Welch and the property presented by Swire
Properties at the meeting is named the Courts/Brickell Key, not
Tequesta 3. The motion passed unanimously.
President's Report
City's 20% Tax on Parking Charges at Condos.
Matter is being researched; should have more information at next
meeting.
Nov.
7th Ballot Item on Off-Street Parking.
Voters will
be able to vote on whether the City of Miami should
take over the Off-Street Parking authority which currently has
a AAA bond rating. (If the City has control, the City would then,
most likely, award the service contract to a private operator
and hopefully increase revenues, however, the cost of parking
in the City would go up which could have adverse effects on retail,
etc.
Nov. 7th
Ballot Item on Finance Reform.
County Commissioner
Jimmy Morales is sponsoring a ballot item
backed by
the League of Women Voters that would provide public
funding for selected County campaigns.
John Gale moved and Ron Smith seconded
a resolution in support of Commissioner Morales' measure. The
motion passed unanimously.
Proposed Development in the Miami Roads
Neighborhood. A 186-unit, 24-story, twin-tower apartment building
in the midst of the single-family home neighborhood is proposed
just to the west of the Metrorail around 18th Road. The Miami
Roads Neighborhood Civic Association opposes this proposal as
it is dense and not in keeping with the single-family home
neighborhood.
Home & Garden Tour. The United Way
and the Miami Roads Neighborhood Civic Association are hosting
a tour at noon on Oct. 22nd starting at Simpson Park.
South Miami Avenue Homeowners Association.
The residents of South Miami Avenue between 15th and 25th Roads
are forming their South Miami Avenue Homeowners Association.
There are 146 homes; most, if not all, are also Miami Roads
Neighborhood
Civic Association
members.
Hampton
Inn. Will appear before the City
Commission on the
26th for approval to add an additional two
stories
on the east-west wing. The BHA supports their request.
Beautification Committee
Report
Paul Lewin, chair of the committee looking at Brickell Avenue
beautification measures said the committee recommends entering
into a agreement with Gerry Marsten of Wallace, Roberts, Todd
to prepare plans and a grant-ready package seeking funding for
further beautification to Brickell Avenue (lighting, additional
irrigation) at a fee of $18,000. Berdie Archer seconded the
committee's
recommendation and it passed
unanimously.
Miami Police Report/Jeffrey Giordano
Officer Giordano brought free
gun locks and car clubs for the
BHA members. He
distributed information about a sex offender
living
in the Brickell area. He reported that at 1401 Brickell
there was an attempted purse snatching. He warned that many offenses
occur on Sundays.
New Development: Park Place at
Brickell
Alan Ojeda of Rilea Group presented a new development on the
block north of 15th Road between Brickell and South Miami Avenues.
This three-phase project would include more than 900 apartment
units and 1,374 parking spaces in three towers with 22,000 square
feet of retail space. It's not yet decided whether the development
will be condo or rental. The developer agreed to landscape the
medians on 15th Road from South Miami Avenue to Brickell Bay
Drive.
Mary
Brickell Village
Phillip LaBarr of Constructa
gave an update on the pedestrian,
open air
development encompassing the 900 block of South Miami
Avenue. It includes a community building, villa-style stores,
5-6 restaurants and 20-foot wide sidewalks. Demolition of the
existing structuresis beginning in 10 days. The vision is to
create a "village feeling."
Miami Senior Adult and Community Education
Center Program
Michael J. Wyckoff presented information about adult education
opportunities. Thru this program Condo association members or
other adult groups with a space to hold classes can get an
instructor
and have classes at the group's location
at times of the group's
choosing on an extremely
wide range of subjects, also of the
group's
choosing.
The
meeting was adjourned at 7:40. The
next meeting
will be Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at Fortune
House.
