Miami Police Report -- Officer Jeffrey Giordano

  • Brickell Forest robbery stopped in progress but burglar not caught.
  • There was a robbery of TVs out of car at The Mandarin.
  • Police are deploying the BHA Radar Speed Reader at various locations along Brickell Avenue.

Senator Gwen Margolis – Condo Acts
The Senator came to greet BHA reps and explain the changes to the Condo Acts just passed in the legislative session. She reported that an ombudsman role was established at the Florida Division of Land Sales, Condos and Mobile Homes. She addressed the BHA main concern of funding for carrying out their role by saying that a half million dollars was appropriated for new people in the Division to speed the responsive of problems. They have to respond in 30 days and adjudicate within 90. The Senator felt what was passed “was a good balance.”

Service Employees International Union – Holly Hutchinson
Ms. Hutchinson said that her nonprofit organization which has the website cleancondos.org is available to talk to condo residents about what management improvements may be needed by their associations/boards of directors.

Venetian Causeway Neighborhood Alliance – Barbara Bisno
Ms. Bisno, a resident of Venetian Isle Causeway said that she got involved with the noise ordinance issue when she heard that City Commissioners were going to pass a new noise ordinance that would increase the allowable decibels to 85-90 after 11 p.m., which is really loud, and placed no limits on levels up until 11 p.m. Many are impacted by the noise of Bayside and Bayfront Park performances that last late into the night and early morning hours. There’s the issue of construction noise and sprawl, which, upon first reading would have opened the door to 4 additional hours of allowable noise, staring as early as 6 a.m. and possibly on Saturdays as well. Ms. Bisno has been working on it for three months with the city to come up with better compromises. Her group recently hired a consultant who is a specialist in advising communities on their noise ordinances. The next reading is scheduled at City Hall for July 22nd, and she asked that all concerned residents attend to be heard on this important quality of life issue.

Villa Magna Project and Traffic Impact Discussion
Some Brickell Key members earlier in the week had written concern to the President about the traffic impact of the Villa Magna project and BHA’s support of it at its April meeting. After a great deal of discussion about the particulars of the project (number of units, traffic flow, configuration); traffic concerns in general in the area; and the number of new projects being built or in the pipeline that will greatly increase the number of residents in the area, Herb Bailey moved and Ron Smith seconded that the BHA motion of support which was passed in April stand. The new motion passed with 2 in opposition and one abstention (Al Maloof).

Next meeting: CANDIDATES FORUM, Thursday, August 19, 7 p.m., Miami Museum of Science.
