A motion was made by Berdie Archer and seconded by Ron Smith that the reading of the February minutes be waived and the minutes be accepted as published. The motion passed unanimously.
President's Report
Traffic. Chief Timoney is organizing a new traffic initiative for downtown Miami. First time police have gotten involved in such a big wayvery big opportunity.
First Presbyterian Church,609 Brickell Avenue, is in the process of being designated a historic landmark.
The No U-turn Resolution. Reading of final language for the resolution setting forth BHA's position on Brickell Avenue signalization and vehicular signage was made and the language passed unanimously. It will be sent to FDOT.
Brickell Harbour. Ron Smith moved and Bruce Cotton seconded that Brickell Harbour's dues be suspended for 2003 in light of the building's recent structural problems and relocation of all residents. Celestino PeÒa, president, expressed thanks and gratitude to the BHA. He said it has been extremely shocking and stressful and the emotional support from BHA has been tremendous. Doesn't know how long he'll be out of their homes. Looking for the availability of temporary housing.
Police Report
New NET Commander, Rudy Llanes, was introduced. He's a 18-year veteran of the police; Commander for three years; was in Little Havana area previously. He encouraged residents to call whenever anything happens. Has a watch order set up for Brickell Harbour and a police car on site.
Jeff Giordano gave a report of robberies in the area over the past monthnothing serious. Burglaries. Tequesta Three had a burglary report but doesn't look like a real case. There appears to be a juvenile making the rounds.scales the fencesis boldhe has been captured on videotape and seems to have emotional/mental issues.
Terrorism/bomb Precautions. One Tequesta Point had a drill check up by the police as a training exercise, looking at storage areas of condo buildings which with terrorism threats could be target areas.
Speed Trailer has been deployed for Brickell Avenue for a week or so.
Second Avenue Bridge over Miami River may be open next month.
City Manager Joe Arriola
The new Chief Administrator presented to the BHA his mission and plan. He reported widespread, systemic neglect throughout the City administration, including literally hundreds of illegal structures in Miami; 546 approved capital improvement projects that haven't been started but for which $300 million is set aside; abuse of privileges by City staffers; millions of dollars in consulting fees without results; and special interests and politics that have ruled the administration for decades.
Mr. Arriola is donating his paycheck and is working to bring about big changes in the short term. He vowed to spend taxpayers' money wisely.
Downtown Miami Partnership's
Just published "Munch" guide was introduced which features restaurant menus for visiting, ordering, delivery, etc. Reps agreed that the DMP could contact BHA building managers for assistance in getting some copies to condos.
