Brickell Street Naming. The Downtown Development Authority hired a consultant on downtown revitalizationin the Central Business District. One of his recommendations was to extend the Brickell name north of the River. Thought it would help rents. The Brickell Area Association Board members voted unanimously to oppose the initiative and wrote to the DDA their opinion.

The following Resolution was moved by Bruce Cotton, seconded by Mac Seligman and unanimously adopted:

WHEREAS Brickell Avenue represents one of Miami's most historic neighborhoods, home to Miami's most prominent citizens throughout history, with international recognition as the luxury high-rise community of Greater Miami representing the finest living in our metropolis, the Brickell Homeowners Association respectfully requests the City not to bestow use of this distinctive name for streets or roads in the City outside of the area from the Miami River to 26th Road and Biscayne Bay to I-95.

Naming streets in other areas not associated with our community's earliest developers, the Brickell family, would be inaccurate and a disservice to both our founders and the present homeowners in the Brickell Neighborhood. It would dilute the Brickell image and brand identity, as well as present a source of confusion to both residents and visitor populations.

Bus Benches with Advertising

The following Resolution was moved by Mac Seligman and seconded by Norm Mininberg. It passed with one opposition.

The Brickell Homeowners Association, representing some 6,000 residential units in the neighborhood between the Miami River and 26th Roads including Brickell Key, requests that the City of Miami Commission recognize the importance of maintaining a residential, non-commercial ambiance in the Brickell Avenue Residential community and, to this end, exclude bus bench and bus shelter advertising on Brickell Avenue between 15th and 26th Roads.

Miami Police/NET Report:
Officer Jeff Giordano and NET Administrator Patricia Castro

  • Variable message signs installed. Two Police officers will be placed there during busy morning and afternoon hoursthe construction company will pay for this.
  • Boat noisedidn't find that engines were above the allowable decibel level. Is it Party Boats? No, early morning fishing boats going out at Brickell Key.
  • Monday, May 20, President will be in Downtown, so expect delays.
  • Variable message sign to go up on Brickell and Eighth Street advising of "Don't block the box." There's been some delays but the project is still going forward.
  • Last month not a single robbery on Brickell.
  • Brickell medians scheduled for clean up and grass cutting, as received in memo from Tony Wagner.

AT&T Wireless
Reconstruction process going on with cable rebuilt to broadband. Over the next two to three weeks AT&T will be cutting off the old system and switching to the new system. Wants to meet with each building to give contact numbers, names and schedules.

A hearing is set for District 2 next Monday, May 21st about cable and public perception of the service. It has to do with AT&T and Comcast. If people have complaints, they should come to the hearing Tuesday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. One of the complaints has been that ATT has been behind in the build out. The timetable is that it will be done before winter holidays.

Coral Station
The Coral Station is the mixed use property east of Publix. Proposed density is less than half of what is permitted under current code and no variances are being requested. Shadows were studied as to possible adverse effects on Simpson Park hammock. Miami-Roads and South Miami Avenue Homeowners Associations are very against it. If turned down when goes before the City, we may get a higher density project in the future. They are to have more parking than required. Clark Turner says this is the type of development we want for Brickell Village area. Architect is the same as Santa Maria and Bristol.

The following motion was passed unanimously:
WHEREAS, members of the Brickell Homeowners Association have long valued their collaborative, supportive relationships with the Miami Roads Neighborhood Civic Association and the South Miami Avenue Homeowners Association, particularly relating to our common efforts to protect and enhance our residential neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, BHA members share our neighbors' concerns regarding the possible negative impact on our neighborhood of the recent significant increase in building construction; and
WHEREAS, BHA members appreciate the vigorous efforts of our neighboring homeowner associations, working with developers, to make projects more compatible; and
RECOGNIZING that there will continue to be more development adjacent to our area, including the Coral Station site; and
WHEREAS, BHA members are concerned that should the Coral Station project be denied, in light of the density permitted by the City's zoning regulations, a project of greater density, offering fewer amenities and less generous mitigation might follow,
THEREFORE, be it resolved that BHA members encourage the representatives of the Miami Roads Association and South Miami Avenue Homeowners to negotiate a settlement with the developer of the Coral Station project that all of us can support at the City of Miami Commission meeting scheduled for June 27, 2002.

Brickell Bay Village Project
Kurt Kenyon, Brickell Bay Village Project Manager, with MK Contractors.

  • Trailer and fence in place
  • Excavation down 14 feet ongoing.
  • Have kept the dust down.
  • Cell: 786-258-3851 for any problems.
  • Will present at next meeting.

New Business
Norm Mininberg raised question about developers as associate members. The president reminded directors that the original premise was that anyone who owns property in the area can be an associate member. This includes developers, who when the Certificate of Occupancy is granted, become full condo members. All were in agreement that this arrangement is still optimal.

Meeting adjourned 7:55 p.m.

Next meeting: Wed., June 19, 6:00 p.m. 25 Bay Tower
