Public Hearing on control of Brickell Avenue, 1-21-2014

The transfer of the control of Brickell Avenue from the State and its Florida Department of Transportation to local authorities has been desired and sought by the Brickell community and was approved last summer in a street swap agreement spearheaded by Commissioner Marc Sarnoff at the urging of residents and BHA. The City Commission approved taking on the responsibility for the roadway stretch between S.E. 8th Street south to SE 26th Road.

The State, however, has stalled the transfer, and is now calling for “public input” to ensure this is the most desired move. The Public Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 6:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 609 Brickell Avenue.

Over many years Brickell residents have asked for a number of changes to make Brickell safer for everyone using it, but particularly for the growing pedestrians and families making Brickell home. Historically the FDOT, viewing Brickell Avenue as Highway (which it is as part of U.S. Highway 1), has refused to implement some of the desired changes such as a lower speed limit, more signalization, crosswalks, etc. Transferring the Brickell portion of the roadway to the City of Miami will provide community with local authority to implement these improvements. All are asked to attend this important hearing to make residents’ desires known.
